Tips To Be Involved In Your Child's Education

 

  • Ask your child about school and take an interest in what they are learning. Learn new things yourself.
  • Make a regular time and space for homework every day.  Turn the TV and cell phones off.
  • Make sure your child gets enough sleep.
  • Let your child know that you expect good work in school and he/she should put forth their best effort.
  • Inform the school of your child's needs and any changes in family circumstances.
  • Establish a communication system with your child's teacher(s) and use it frequently.
  • Respond to all messages from school.
  • Attend school meetings, events, school board meetings, and Parent-Teacher Conferences.
  • If you can't volunteer at school during school hours, ask the principal or Parent Involvement Coordinator for ways to help at home or on the weekends.
  • Help set up and manage a classroom phone tree or email list.
  • Be involved in the PAC - Parent Advisory Council - at Milan Elementary School or Milan Middle School.
  • Be a public supporter of education.  Get informed about state and local education laws.
  • Find out which community organizations serve diverse cultural groups and help the school connect with them to provide services for families.
  • Thank local merchants and business people who support education and schools.

No Child Left Behind (NCLB) required schools to develop ways to get parents more involved in their child's education and in improving the school.  Milan Special School District has two schools that receive federalTitle I-A funds.  Milan Elementary School and Milan Middle School are both school-wide Title I schools and receive these extra funds.  Funds for these programs are intended to ensure that all children have the opportunity to obtain a high-quality education and reach proficiency on challenging state academic standards and assessments.  School-wide programs use their funds to improve the entire program of the school so that all students are impacted.

Milan Elementary School and Milan Middle School have a Parent Involvement Coordinator.
